Synchro Canada celebrates International Day of Disabled Persons on December 3, 2006!
December 1, 2006 (Ottawa): In celebration of the International Day of Disabled Persons (December 3, 2006), Synchro Canada invites people with disabilities, including special needs children, to live a healthier lifestyle by experiencing the benefits of aquatic activity. Swimming is a great way to improve flexibility, cardiovascular stamina, muscular strength, agility and more. Synchro Canada, together with its provincial associations and clubs throughout Canada, offer two different programs suitable for people with disabilities. The STAR program teaches synchro-specific skills such as sculling, flamingos and more. As swimmers advance from one STAR level to the next, they receive badges and certificates and can perform synchro routines in water shows and competitions.

Synchro Canada, together with the Canadian Red Cross, also offer AquaSquirts, an aquatic program for children aged 11 and under. The
philosophy of the program allows for swimmers to learn and improve basic water orientation skills in a relaxed, fun-filled and creative environment.
This unique approach to teaching aquatic skills makes AquaSquirts ideal for children with special needs, including swimmers with disabilities.

Kristin Hayes, a synchro swimmer with a disability since 1995, says, < Synchro is a way for me to express my artistic side. I can create routines that showcase my assets and downplay my disability. I feel so empowered when I am in the water. I love this sport and everything it offers me." Doreen, Kristin's mom adds, "I am constantly amazed by what my daughter accomplishes in the water. I am proud of her synchro talent and I am also pleased with the associated health benefits. Her flexibility and lung capacity are astounding. Synchro offers as much (if not more) than her physiotherapy treatments"

The fun, friendship and fitness that people with disabilities will experience by participating in synchro will last a lifetime! For more information about programs, please contact Wendy White Morrow at wendy@synchro.ca. To view a video promoting the benefits of synchro for athletes with disabilities entitled, "Live the Dream! Youth Exchange 2004 Announced
Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability (ALACD), in partnership with premiere sponsor, Pfizer Canada Inc is pleased to announce an innovative national program that will offer young Canadians an opportunity of a lifetime. Supported by the YMCA Youth Exchanges Canada program, which is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, this exchange program is in its fourth year and we are thrilled to share it with you!

Fifty (50) delegates from all regions of the country will be hosted at a national exchange in Ottawa, Ontario from June 29 - July 4, 2004. The goals of the exchange are to enable participants to:

  • Connect participants with one another and create linkages
  • Discover Canadian heritage
  • Share experiences
  • Learn valuable communication and advocacy skills
  • Explore our cultural diversity
  • Try new and exciting physical activities

    The Program
The Exchange Program is a creative and challenging experience. In keeping with our commitment to explore and celebrate the diversity of disability and Canadian culture, we are proposing a program that includes the following areas:

    Cultural experiences
Delegates will participate in workshops and discussions about diversity and Canadian heritage. A number of day trips are scheduled to local attractions. Local and national celebrities will also be in attendance throughout the Exchange.

    Physical activity program
Delegates will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of physical activities. Activities are designed for all levels of ability. In previous exchanges we arranged rock climbing, canoeing, dancing, swimming, horseback riding, hockey, archery and high ropes courses.

    Education
There will be a educational component that teaches delegates about the importance of communication, problem solving, goal setting, risk taking and trust. Through different mediums, youths will learn to express themselves more confidently.

    The Participants
All youths between the ages of 14 and 17 as of June 1, 2004 who have not previously participated in a similar exchange are eligible. Candidates are selected based on the following criteria:

  • Regional representation
  • Gender balance
  • Cultural diversity
  • Representation of a diverse spectrum of disabilities

We welcome young Canadians who are creative and enthusiastic and who demonstrate a desire to become an active living Ambassador in their own community.

    Participant Costs
Through the generous support of theYMCA Youth Exchanges Canada, Exchanges Canada, and Pfizer Canada Inc., the cost of travel, meal and accommodations for participants will be covered. We are working very hard to offset or eliminate program costs, however we may assess each youth a participation fee. We will also work with participants to connect them with service clubs in their hometowns who may help raise any necessary costs.

    How to apply
Young Canadians interested in applying to join the Youth Exchange should contact Wendy Ireland at wendy@ala.ca or 1-800-771-0663 to request an application form.

The entire exchange will be staffed by chaperones and team leaders selected from across Canada. All leaders involved are well-trained individuals who are dedicated to making the event a success.
